Geodesic Domes: Time to "level-up" this construction industry sector ?
For any industry to flourish, there is a need to emerge from the "wild-west" perception associated with that industry. Public expectations, regarding that industry, need to distilled and crystallized into a shared vision of what those expectations are.
To achieve this, the motivated "thought-leaders" and visionaries need to consolidate (to a degree) their differences on the what, why and how, and present as united a view as possible, to "enlighten" their Community Leaders regarding the need to protect their members thru the implementation of a minimal-set of Regulations, for the common good.
As for Regulations, on the whole, these are ineffective and unenforceable ... unless they refer to, and enforce an equally minimal-set of Standards, for each of
- usage-deployment (context-fit assessment and permit-ing),
- defined components (usable and complementary set of interchangeable components suited to various normed sizes)
- methods (procedures and variability),
- skill-sets for the workers (training and certification), and
- final attestation of compliance (inspection, both staged and final, and certification).
But how do you get to those Standards and Regulations?
That consolidation of views/opinions mentioned above needs be "fleshed-out" and crystallized.
A common approach (low-key in my view) is the use of Social
Media, Podcast, or Industry Conferences, where thoughts and
opinions can be shared by individuals with their peers. That gets
the "juices" flowing!
The more driven take the pro-active approach of seeking-out and associating with like-minded individuals/organizations and establishing a formal structure to direct/coordinate/manage their shared efforts and investments, for shared-benefits and limited-risks: a Consortium.
It might be time for the Geodesic Dome industry to realize that
it needs such a Consortium for joint effort and investment, at the
very least, for the first two of those five areas of standards and
regulation control.
- shared investments research,
- joint input and influence on Standards Definition,
- joint efforts in promoting Standards Adoption, and
- shared preferential benefits derived therefrom
(Copyrights and Patents; a big motivator for electronics
manufacturers).
I truly believe that his might be the step that would bring this industry segment to the "next level" of the market awareness, and its associated business volume.
To that end, not actually being an "active" participant in the
industry but in an attempt to encourage that sharing of "thought
leadership", I naïvely, and humbly, offer up the following as a
few channels where efforts could be devoted:
- Construction
Engineering and Management @ University of Virginia
- Tim Costell, retired leader of BHI ==>> Builder Innovator
- "Getting the word out" via podcasting thru industry-oriented sites like "The Juice Blog - Home Builder"
- International Builder's Show
- a place to contact possible consortium participants: Construction Blockchain Consortium
- an approach to facilitating "buy-in": Public-Private-Partnerships (P3)
- organization that attracts influencers for European-Union construction initiatives: CEBC
- article about Horizon Europe project (for those in Europe, much food for thought)
- climate change impacting the imperative to "work together": SNUG Consortium
- focused on putting construction research on European Agenda: ECCREDI
- European Construction Industry Federation
- Australian Construction Industry Forum
- Big 5 Construct South Africa
- effort geared to need of South America: Modular Building Institute
- XXV International Trade Show + Construction + Engineering + Architecture + Design
I do hope that this "short" list helps those working on Geodesic Domes, who have the time and resources, can see the wisdom to join together to leverage their efforts to bring their insights and knowledge to influence future intentions, investments and achievements in this world of limitless potential! 🙂
